New Zealand designer Wynn Hamlyn launched their high-energy Resort ’24 collection in an abandoned tunnel beneath Sydney’s Central Station before guiding guests to an after-party at a go-kart racetrack in his return to Australian Fashion Week (AAFW) earlier this week.
The collection was fuelled with dynamic and sporty silhouettes, moto-inspired jackets and leather, and vibrant red and blue hues. Partnering with Australian beauty brand MECCA MAX for the beauty, each runway look was accentuated with graphic make-up to emphasise movement. Make-up director Sean Brady leveraged the venue for his creative direction: “I’ve used the MECCA MAX Zoom Liners and Zoom Shadow Sticks (aptly named) to create a look of momentum,” he says.
“As the show is hosted on a go karting track, I wanted to build on this and depict an element of speed and movement whilst also reflecting the brands modernity and use of colour that exist within the collection.”
Wynn Hamlyn’s Resort ‘24 collection is the designer’s response to the hype and sub-culture surrounding motorsport as it permeates popular society.
“I’ve been so intrigued by the rise in popularity of Formula One that has exposed so many people to the thrill of ‘the race’, and the electric sub-culture that surrounds it,” he says.
“Resort ’24 was inspired by all the elements of ‘the race’, including the speed, the kaleidoscopic colour amidst the track and the crowds, the chequered flags, the luxury sponsors, and even the carbon fibre technology incorporated into the wheels of the cars.”
Overall, the aesthetic captures the essence of speed, precision, and a daring attitude, making a bold statement both on and off the track. Below is a visual diary from Wynn Hamlyn’s high-octane AAFW Resort ‘24 collection.
