Budding makeup artists and industry professionals alike gathered at Raynham Park Studios on Auckland’s Karangahape Road for the masterclass by the incredibly talented makeup artist Kiekie Stanners. Presented by Showroom 22 the event focused on Kiekie’s illustrious career from her humble makeup counter beginnings (where she told the crowd she fibbed her way into a job) to being the creative director for MAC campaigns, working backstage on models at the top international fashion weeks, and doing the makeup for celebrities like Lorde for the cover of Vogue magazine, and dance choreographer to the stars Paris Goebel. Dressed in a red Wynn Hamlin dress with a matching red lip, she had the crowd hanging on her every word.
Here are FQ’s top makeup takeaways from her wealth of knowledge (and trade secrets) she openly shared.
1. Not all reds are created equal
When it comes to a bold red lip, finding the right shade for your complexion is important. But one classic red combo that works for the majority of people is MAC cherry lip pencil, and MAC Ruby Woo lipstick.
2. Different shades
To create dimensions on the face use different shades of setting powders. A lighter powder through the center of the face, medium on the outside, with a darker shade to contour will help you create this effect.
3. Feather-like strokes
To make your brows look natural use feather-like strokes along your natural brow. This will avoid having a straight line of brow product through the brow. Work through the brow with thin strokes moving up and outwards – and then elongate the end.
4. Drawing outside the lines
To make a bold red lip pop sometimes overdrawing the lip will help to achieve this. Just make sure that the pencil is very sharp.
5. Cream underneath
If you want to make your face look lit from within you can apply a cream blush underneath a wash of light foundation. This will give you a naturally flushed look. However, this can only be achieved with a cream blush – don’t use powder as it will pill.
