Winter cover star Amberley Colby tells us about her penchant for op shopping, what’s on her winter wish list, and what it's like to be on a cover shoot with FQ.

She’s the cover star of our ‘The Future is Bright’ fashion editorial which was shot at the whimsical Naumi Studio Wellington by Steven Tilley and styled Sammy Salsa. Born and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau, Amberley started modelling 10 years ago when she was scouted at a shopping mall.

Since then she’s modelled in various campaigns and magazines, and currently balances modelling with study, work, as well as interning at Fashion Quarterly.

We caught up with her to chat about her love of vintage shopping, her favourite places to visit in Wellington, and how to shop on a student budget.

Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up, and how did you get your start in modelling?

I was born and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau and have lived here all my life when I haven’t been working overseas. I got my start in modelling a long time ago (10 years ago to be exact) when I was walking around a mall with my dad and got scouted. The ball started rolling from there.

What makes you happy?

Lots of things, but spending time with my friends, family and boyfriend are certainly the most important to me. Being around people with good energy can instantly lift my mood.

What are you passionate about in life?

I guess finding things that keep me inspired and driven. I love working in fashion and I love clothes, so I foresee myself working in and around this industry for some time.

How would you describe your personal style?

Eclectic. Some days it’s super tailored and monochrome and other days it’s flares and a multi-coloured top. I also love statement pieces like a colourful silk shirt or corset. What I wear on a given day is dependent on the season and my mood, and it also changes from day to night!

What was it like being on the Fashion Quarterly shoot in Wellington?

It was such a pleasure getting flown down for the shoot – I love Wellington. We were shooting and staying at Wellington hotel Naumi Studio which has such a funky vibe and it was great getting to tour the place as we shot. The clothes were also amazing, Sammy Salsa styled me in lots of super bright pieces to complement the vibrancy of Naumi’s interior.

What are your favourite places to visit in Wellington?

Being down in Wellington for the shoot was pretty fast-paced, but when I visit for longer I love to have dinner at Ombra or 1154. You can’t really go too wrong on Cuba street, there are great places to eat everywhere. I also love hitting up the op shops.

What are you currently studying, and do you have any side jobs?

I am studying a Bachelor of Arts, specialising in Communications at the University of Auckland. I have one semester left before I graduate which is exciting. While studying I have been working a bit in retail and interning at FQ! I haven’t exactly figured out what I’ll do when I finish studying, but stay tuned.

What are the fashion items on your winter wish list and the things you currently can’t get enough of?

As for things I currently can’t get enough of: I am currently loving the black leather trench that I thrifted a couple of months ago. It’s been such a wardrobe staple since the weather has started cooling down. I also love my Frisson Knits jumper and cardi. My winter wishlist: Prada loafers.

Do you have any tips for shopping on a budget for fellow students?

I think thrift shopping is your best friend when you have a shopping habit like me but are on a budget. If you know where to look you can find some great pieces at great prices. I also sell my old clothes which ensures I’m not buying too much and helps give me a bit of added income.

Favourite podcast?

Crime Junkie.

What are you reading right now?

I just finished Emily Ratajkowski’s My Body.

Best coffee/cocktail spot in Auckland?

Red Rabbit for coffee. Peach pit, Bar Celeste or Beau’s for cocktails/drinks.
