For those who thought the Y2K trend was a passing phase, it may be sticking around for a bit longer. But not to worry, it doesn’t have to be all low rise jeans and midriffs (although, naturally, they’re still a strong feature!). And while Y2K fashion (styles from the late ’90s to the early 2000s) is usually about making a statement, read on for some ways you can incorporate it into your attire without looking like you’ve completely regressed.
1. The mini
The mini is back, and we love its recent iterations in vibrant colours and different textures. Don’t worry about baring your legs in the cold — team with a turtleneck and some knee-high boots to keep you warm.
2.The going-out top
Wasn’t life so simple when you just wore ‘a going out top’ with jeans? Fortunately, this is one Y2K trend that’s easy to wear. And like most things with this trend, the brighter, the better.
3. Loose tailoring
While much of Y2K clothing leaves little to the imagination, one style offering more fabric is the addition of loose tailored pants and matching jackets. Try the updated version of Harris Tapper suiting with an overshirt instead of a jacket.
4. Snakeskin
We all (well, some of us!) remember Christina Aguilera in her snakeskin pants. Thankfully, this trend is back in a more understated way.
5. Lace-ups
Strings are back this season, and whether it’s a lace-up top, dress or pants, the tie-up trend will see you flashing a little bit of skin here, there and everywhere.
6. The basics
Pared-back styling of the ’90s makes an appearance in the form of the classic white tank or white tee. Easily styled with jeans (low rise or otherwise) or a mini, why not make it a crop if you’re game?
7. Small statement bags
A brightly coloured bag isn’t exactly new, but right now, it’s almost a case of the smaller, the better. It’s time to put your monotone tote away and find a little something to sling over your shoulder.
