The only New Zealand label presenting at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week 2021, yesterday Maggie Marilyn showcased the spellbinding film A Brave New World to debut its new Forever capsule.
A nod to community and optimism after the year that’s been, A Brave New World was inspired by an image shared by Laura Jackson, founder of Hoste London and long-time supporter of Maggie Marilyn.
“The image depicted a group of friends gathered outside around a long dining table on a warm summer’s evening. Breaking bread, laughing, storytelling and enjoying each other’s company. There was a lightness I was immediately drawn to and it reminded me of the simple pleasure that comes from dressing up and sharing a meal with your favourite people”, explains designer Maggie Hewitt.
Directed by Duc Thinh Dong, A Brave New World cleverly infuses community and optimism into every frame, from the metaphorical significance of planting a tree into fresh soil to the joyous act of slicing fresh figs in preparation for an indulgent feast with loved ones.
The spirit of the models in the film further represents an undeniable joy threaded through Maggie Marilyn’s latest Forever capsule. Think whimsical garments in azure blues, warm chocolate browns, buttery creams and a golden gingham that catch the light and demand to be danced in.
Maggie Marilyn worked with conscious jewellery designer Mineraleir and footwear designer Nelson Made to create limited-edition pieces for A Brave New World that emulate the Forever capsule’s whimsical and romantic aesthetic.
To bring A Brave New World’s vision to life with hair, Maggie Marilyn partnered with environmentally conscious hair brand R+Co and Paloma Garcia, owner and director of Paloma Salon.
The dreamy and optimistic makeup look was envisaged by MECCA, using conscious and considered brands. MECCA Makeup Director Isabella Schimid focused on glowing, natural skin that oozed lived-in dewiness.
A Brave New World was shot across 120 acres of sprawling Australian countryside at The Range in Byron Bay, bringing together some of Australia’s most talented creatives, including producer Lauren Barge, photographer Dan Robert, stylist Emma Kalfus, and models Shimma Marie, Mahalia Handley and New Zealand expat Manahou Mackay.
Maggie Marilyn’s new Forever offering is now available to shop online at maggiemarilyn.com or in-store at the Maggie Marilyn homes in Britomart and Newmarket. Each Forever piece is crafted from traceable and organic or repurposed fibres, responsibly made in New Zealand and produced in limited runs.
The Mineraleir collaboration will be available to shop from 9 June 2021. The Nelson Made collaboration is available for pre-order until 9 June 2021 and will be released in full from September 2021.
