Forget everything you know about your storybook princess wedding, the 2019 trend report suggests that the coming year of nuptials are all about being minimal, natural and personal.

Less is more according to Pinterest who, in their 2019 Wedding Report, concludes a conscious, pared-back approach to tying the knot is the ‘in thing’. Based on what people are saving and pinning, a distinct trend away from extravagance has emerged with Pinners exploring sustainable angles for their big day. But anti-consumerism isn’t the only undercurrent at work here. As you’ll discover below, a shift towards natural settings and natural beauty take (to have and to…)hold.

Intimate Weddings

It’s all about you and me, baby… And maybe one or two others. Intimate weddings with fewer guests in attendance – or none at all – is a popular trend with elopements to the courthouses, forests, foreign beaches and foreign destinations being cited in the report. Additionally, ‘elopement photography ideas‘ are up +128% with Pinterest suggesting that users are curious about intimate ways to capture romantic getaways. While searches for ‘destinations in the mountains‘ (+32%) point to Pinners looking into fun, niche and hard-to-get-to spots for their big day.

Weddings in Nature

Millennials and Gen-Z Pinners are all about bringing their commitments back down to earth. A Pinterest study indicates that they are twice as likely to care about sustainability than users over 38– and this conscience is creeping into their wedding plan prep. More specifically, ‘sustainable wedding ideas‘ has seen a +181% search increase in the past 12 months. ‘Weddings outdoors’ are up +94%, ‘Backyard wedding’ are up a whopping +441% only to be topped by ‘small beach weddings’ which has increased by +511%.

Weddings that fit you (not the other way around)

We’ve drummed in notions of self-love, embracing your body and applauding barefaced beauty for years here at Fashion Quarterly so it was music to our ears when we learned that Pinners have been exploring means of celebrating their big day in a way that embraces their unretouched selves. Searches for ‘natural wedding hairstyles African‘ are up +69%, ‘wedding dresses for curvy brides‘ up +2113% and ‘wedding lesbian suits‘ are up +1666%.

Modesty & Multicultural Weddings

Gone are the days of mini wedding dresses, high-low-hemmed wedding dresses, sweetheart necklines and off the shoulder or strapless wedding dresses. Pinterest data, based on wedding dress ideas from across the globe, suggests that relaxed, modest dresses are what’s populating Pinner’s boards. “Of the top 100 trending search terms, 30% of them belong to multicultural weddings, such as wedding hijab styles, Nigerian weddings, and South Indian weddings,” the report shows.
