We don’t think any of us will need much encouragement with this one.
Arguably the most coveted handbag in the world, the Hermès Birkin is often spotted effortlessly hanging off the arm of the most fashionable celebrities such as Victoria Beckham and Rachel Zoe.
Victoria alone is said to own over 100 Hermès bags worth more than $2 million. And as it turns out, you could even say Victoria is extremely money-savvy by housing so many Birkin bags… let us explain.
A study conducted by luxury handbag website Baghunter has revealed that purchasing a Birkin is one of the smartest ways to invest your money. And no we’re not just talking about cost per wear.
When looking at the average annual return over the last 35 years, owning a Birkin is apparently a less risky investment compared to purchasing gold or stocks on the S&P 500 American stock market index.
While the average annual return of the S&P 500 landed at a real return average of 8.65% (and gold was even lower with an average of 1.9%) an Hermès Birkin is the queen of the crop, standing at an average annual return of 14.2%.
Even the least money-savvy among us can admit that the Birkin is by far the most profitable avenue of investment according to this study *wink*.
Backed by the fact that since 2001, the value of the Birkin has increased exponentially. One pre-loved bag even went to auction last year shattering auction records after selling for USD $380,000.
And if you’re still not convinced…
Unlike other investments, the Birkin can be considered a less risky asset. Its quality is excellent, the bag is repairable for life and the value of the bag itself hasn’t fluctuated downwards in the last 35 years.
We’re definitely not investment experts, but we can’t help but get on board with this one.
So “where can I get in on said investment?” we hear you ask:
The Hermès Birkin is so valuable and scarce that they are considered a collector’s item. There is reportedly a waitlist for up to six years for a new Birkin depending on the style you are after.
One does not simply go online and ‘add to bag’. To procure a Birkin, you need to have connections or a lot of money to get your hands on one of these bad boys new. But fear not, this investment is still within reach for us plebs, with high demand in the resale market for the famed bag. Many luxury websites now sell a range of pre-loved Birkins, so perhaps it’s time to get your investment hat on…
