One current trend we haven’t been seeing much of this NZFW is the seventies, but at Lucilla Gray, we were throwing peace signs in the air, left, right and centre.
It wasn’t only the subtle nod to the era that drew us in to Lucilla’s world, however. A small, and very well-considered collection, the Wellington designer showcased a capsule of wearable silhouettes that were effortlessly cohesive together, and would sit seamlessly against existing wardrobe favourites.
The colour palette
Black, white, denim, burnt orange and a citrus imbued Pucci-esque print, presented a unified range of autumnal tones.
The accessories
Perspex has been popping up on the runway this week, so it’s a trend we know we’ll be seeing a lot of in seasons to come. The earrings at Lucilla Gray were a show-stopping finishing touch; two simple circles stacked on top of each other, with pops of turquoise, black and pearl white.
The waists
Pants and skirts were tailored to sit high above the navel, highlighting the models’ waists – giving shape where there wasn’t much to work with while at the same time showing off curves to perfection. And we loved the obi-inspired wrap belts, too.
The frills
There’s nothing like a little peppering of frills to add a bit of flair to an outfit, and the frill-necked skivvies were a delightfully feminine touch that we haven’t seen anywhere else, despite the strong presence of turtlenecks across the board this fashion week.
The makeup
No makeup makeup is the look du jour, but we love that at Lucilla Gray, there was a little bit of attitude mixed in thanks to some killer liquid liner. MAC makeup artist Blair Gamblin told us backstage before the show that they worked with Lucilla’s penchant for super fresh skin and added one graphic element. “We teamed a really graphic curved liner with a fresh blush and lips,” she explained. “We wanted to create a curved liner so it had a dreaminess and ethereal feel.”
The hair
Crimping, people, crimping! Backstage, about two hours before the show, models were walking around with super tight crimps, but on the runway, they’d been brushed out to reveal just a hint of texture in the hair. Think of it as a modern, everyday way to wear your favourite high school hair look. Glitter hairspray and butterfly clips not included.
