As June ushers in the official arrival of winter, the time has come to start reaching for our favourite knits. Whether you gravitate towards the luxurious softness of ultra-fine cashmere, or find solace in the classic allure of a trusty turtleneck, these sartorial companions become essential layer pieces once the temperature drops. Last winter we saw a trend towards bright-coloured knitwear, and this season we’re welcoming a shift towards more muted, minimalistic tones and silhouettes.

Although a good quality knit might feel like a big investment, their ability to withstand the test of time makes them a wise and worthwhile investment. So, if you’re in the market for some new dependable base layers, then read on for our top knitwear picks of the season.

Vest is best

Whether layered over a classic collared shirt, or worn as a statement piece on their own, knitted vests are an enduring style for a reason.

Ruby Knit
Ruby ‘Watermelon’ vest, $199.
Ganni knit
Ganni ‘Striped’ Mohair Vest, $389.

Librarian core

If Miu Miu’s FW23 show taught us anything, it was that cardigan core is going to be big this winter. Some could argue that cardigans have – and will never – go out of style, but it definitely seems like the classic cardi is having a bit of a renaissance right now.

Maggie Marilyn knit
Maggie Marilyn ‘01' Cardigan, $295.
Ruby Knit
Ruby ‘Matilda’ cardigan, $289.

Off the shoulder

It may be winter, but showing a little skin is always in vogue. Reminiscent of many Y2K styles, an off-the-shoulder knit is a perfect way to add a bit of structure to your ensemble.

Marle knit
Marle ‘Yin’ Jumper, $350.
Wixii Knit
Wixii ‘Bon’ Cashmere Silk top, $275.

Shrug it off

Some might consider a shrug to be somewhat impractical for fighting the chill, but this humble style is in fact a highly functional layer piece. Seen on the likes of many fashion It-girls, shrug style knits pair well over a basic white tank or tee.

Ruby Knit
Ruby ‘Bobbi’ Shrug, $269.
Rachel Mills knit
Rachel Mills ‘Brenda’ Bolero, $131.

Trusty turtleneck

You can’t go wrong with a turtleneck, and while a sleek merino rendition is a must-have in any wardrobe, we’re loving the boxy fits this season has brought about.

Aje knit
Aje ‘Journey’ Chunky Jumper, $375.
Anine bing knit
Anine Bing ‘Courtney’ Sweater, $829.

Peek-a-boo

We’re no stranger to the cutout trend that has dominated the fashion industry for the last couple of seasons. Dare to bare a little skin with these peek-a-boo knit styles.

Wixii Knit
Wixii ‘Mata’ Cashmere Silk top, $325.
Rachel Mills knit
Rachel Mills ‘Scoop’ bodysuit, $239
