5 things we loved at Salasai

Salasai kicked off day two of NZFW with an epic 90s-inspired show that kept with the brand’s signature androgynous aesthetic.

1. The set
A white, wooden, rectangle structure dominated the space, creating two separate runways for the models to march down while a low key ‘stand where you like’ arrangement did away with any sense of frow hierarchy.

2. The fabrics
Big chunky knits, dark floral-printed silks and long layers brought to mind 90s nostalgia. From a long camel men’s cardigan to the perfect pair of navy women’s trousers, designers Kirsha Whitcher and Kelly Watson’s autumn/winter 2017 collection focused on androgynous pieces that could work in any wardrobe.

3. The accessories
If there is one trend we’re all loving right now it’s the choker and it seems Kirsha and Kelly don’t want this trend to die down either. Models wore Victorian cameo ribbons and strings of white pearls down the runway while black knit beanies infused an element of grunge.

4. The beauty look
MAC Cosmetics senior artist Kiekie Stanners brought a dark, gothic glamour to the runway with glossy black lips, thick black eyeliner and custom neck and hand tattoos in Old English text. Meanwhile Stephen Marr’s go-to hairdresser Matt Benns softened the look with soft, ripple-like S waves and double French braids.

5. The soundtrack
Take us back to the late 80s please! Nick Cave, The Clash, Pixies and Chris Isaak brought a melancholic spirit to the collection.
