5 things we love this week

Good things come in pairs this week. We have skincare, haircare, and make-up duos designed to work alone or in harmony from Rich & George, Clinique, and MATER Beauty, plus timeless investments for your wrist and wardrobe from Rolex and Aje that’ll have you wishing payday was here already.

1. Clean Slate

In a bid to slow skincare down and return to a minimalist edit of products that do the job and do it well is Rich & George. Offering a cleanser and a moisturiser packed with powerful ingredients targeting a wide-range of needs, this duo makes taking care of your skin a simple task. Designed for all ages, skincare stages and genders, Rich & George appeals to every body. Chic packaging, unfussy application, and effective results. If you’re looking to return to the essentials, declutter your bathroom shelves, or want to set someone up with some quality skincare so that they stop using yours, Rich & George should be your first port of call. You might even find yourself sampling theirs.

The Clean Slate Cleanser truly does what it says it does. There’s a refreshing scent of green tea on lather and a glycolic acid which slaves away dead skin cells, while Kawakawa and coffee bean provide antioxidants and nutrition for the fresh skin underneath. If you hit the gym often or layer on the SPF daily, this is an ideal way to cleanse and balance your skin efficiently without being too aggressive. The Get Set Moisturiser follows with maximum hydration and minimal weight thanks to the hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.

Clean Slate Moisturiser, $45
Get Set Moisturiser, $55
The Two Step Standard, $85

2. Pretty in Pink

Tapping into a cultural undercurrent craving nostalgia through a present-day lens is Aje’s Pre-Fall 23 collection ‘Nowness of Then’. Reimagining the audacity of the 1980s (think: shoulder-pads, power-suiting, Sixteen Candles prom dresses etc.) with our inherent desire to dress up after the most casual few years to date, you can expect decadent draping, retro-inspired prints, and playful tailoring that embraces feminine silhouettes. But it’s not all ‘80s, there’s plenty of ‘90s conventions woven into the collection too. Panelled indigo denim, faux leather, and deep grungy tones anchor the opulent pieces provided much-needed wearability. The message is clear: let’s have a little fun with our fashion and enjoy the present right now.

3. Prime time

Is it us, or has your skin been feeling a little dull too? Right on queue are the two new Even Better™ primers from Clinique. Depending on your skin’s needs and your desired base effect, there are two primer formulas to choose from. Designed to be layered under make-up or worn alone, these primers will provide your complexion with an intensely healthy glow.

For those who are partial to a dewy, lit-from-within sheen, you’ll want to reach for the Even Better™ Light Reflecting Primer. This lightweight formula is filled with prismatic illuminators which use light to even out the look of imperfections. While the brightening and smoothening is instant, the formula will continue to work on your bare skin resulting in more naturally radiant and even-looking skin over time. The Even Better™ Pore Defying Primer on the other hand contains Clinque’s hardest-working pore-minimising and oil-controlling ingredients to achieve a balanced and flawless finish. The water-balm primer gives your make-up an instant lift while, over time, you can expect up to an 11% pore reduction over time. Both primers are fragrance-free, silicone-free, non-acnegenic, and allergy tested.

Clinique Even Better™ Light Reflecting Primer, $71
Clinique Even Better™ Pore Defying Primer, $71

Available at Farmers, Smith & Caugheys, Ballantynes, Life Pharmacy and David Jones and online at clinique.co.nz

4. Tick tock

Choosing a watch that is timeless (no pun intended) to invest in is an all-consuming task. If your personal style blurs the lines between classic and contemporary, deciding which avenue you’ll go down feels even more complicated. Enter Rolex’s Perpetual 1908 watch. Elegant, balanced, and daring, its slim case is defined by gracious lines, a delicately detailed bezel, and a transparent case back. Inspired by one of the first Rolex watches fitted with the Perpetual rotor, the 1908 is the first member of the Perpetual collection. This new collection is a reinterpretation of traditional watchmaking style imbued with quintessential watchmaking expertise and the aesthetic heritage of Rolex. Fitted on an alligator leather strap in either matt black or matt brown, it features a double folding clasp in 18 ct yellow or white gold so that it always sits centred on the wrist. The only issue? Choosing which colourway combination to go for.

5. Lather up

Shampoo bars are brilliant in theory but seldom live up to the efficacy of their liquid counterparts… according to MATER Beauty founder Petra, that is. Which is why she has gone on to develop her very own solid haircare bars. Having extremely colour-treated hair herself, ensuring that these haircare bars were packed with active, salon-quality ingredients for optimal nourishment and strengthening was a top priority – besides the obvious environmental benefits of switching to a solid haircare bar, of course. There are two options available: T.L.C Nourishing Shampoo Bar which is designed to enhance shine and volume, promote hair growth, and repair and soften; and the GOOD HAIR DAYS Super Charged Conditioner Bar formulated with highly-concentrated proteins, emollients and humectants (which translates to strengthening, hydrating, and smoothing, respectively). Both bars are also free of sulphates, silicones, synthetic colours, animal products and fragrances.

T.L.C Nourishing Shampoo Bar, 70g, $24
GOOD HAIR DAYS Super Charged Conditioner Bar, 55gm, $28
