FaceGym launches at Mecca; we sample soda with a conscience; and the ultimate literary and visual escapism you need to wind down after a long week.

Face Gym launches at Mecca

1. FaceGYm

Want a morning gym routine without the sweat? Then look no further because this week FaceGym has landed at Mecca. The British facial fitness company (with a cult celebrity following) is known for giving your face a workout with a series of facial exercises. And while the actual facial we’ve heard so much about will only be available from their George Street store in Sydney, here in NZ you can still buy their much talked about gravity defying facial tools and supercharged skincare for a one of a kind facial workout. Fresh, firm and fit skin are at your fingertips.

Not Soda by Lo Bros

2. Fizzed up

Move over negroni sbagliato, there’s a new drink of choice and it’s from the team behind our beloved local kombucha brand Lo Bros. Their new soda brand – Not Soda – has partnered with ocean impact organisation Seven Clean Seas to tackle plastic pollution; and given that PET bottled drinks from the soda industry are at the top of the list of global polluters, they’re taking measures to make sure we can enjoy the delicious and oh-so refreshing Raspberry, Pink Grapefruit, Orange, and Lemon flavours while saving two plastic bottles from the ocean with each can.

3. Power puff

As the northern hemisphere experiences the highs and throes of Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris, we’ve been avidly following the coverage – controversial and otherwise. While Schiaparelli’s all-too-real surrealism generated an onslaught of criticism for their beastly displays (read: faux animal heads inspired by 14th-century poems), Giambattista Valli’s runway of sumptuous gowns and sugary-soft Beverly Hills-inspired colour palettes have been a tonic for the eyes.

While utterly impractical, we appreciate how the Italian designer has delivered visual relaxation on another level. As for the pearl earrings? No doubt we’ll be seeing these resurface in the next season of Emily in Paris (you heard it here first).

4. The long and short of it

These eight reality-bending tales in Ling Ma’s Bliss Montage remove us just far enough from the world we recognise into one where the ordinary and the extraordinary become eerily indistinguishable. Packaged up like a fever dream in paperback form, we encounter a woman cohabitating with 100 of her ex-boyfriends, a drug that makes you invisible, and perhaps most unnervingly, stories with few surreal elements that nonetheless speak to the dystopia of our time as if to say, ‘You couldn’t make this sh*t up’.

BLUNT Umbrella x Misery Lunar New Year 2023 design

5. Raining joy

As we settle into the Lunar New Year of the Rabbit for 2023, BLUNT has marked the occasion by collaborating with New Zealand artist Tanja Jade McMillen (Misery) who drew on her Chinese heritage to design a limited edition umbrella. Featuring bright white rabbits relaxing and skipping over calm flowing waters, this illustration is true to her signature style, including a black canopy with bright pops of colour to the rabbits, goldfish and vibrant blossoming Lotus flowers to life.

Available online and in stores from the 26th of January in Metro or Classic sizes.
