We sit down with up and coming designer Jarrad Godman to chat about his first solo show at NZFW, his favourite piece from his new collection and what’s next for his namesake brand.
Tell me a little bit about yourself, where did you study?
I did a very short stint at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in 2008 before deciding to look for some real world experiences. I returned to university in 2012, beginning a Bachelor of Fashion at AUT. I graduated in 2014.
When did you start your label?
I was lucky enough to be able to start my label as soon as I graduated. My grad collection “Angler” was picked up by Children of Vision after it was presented in the 2014 AUT Rookie showcase.
Is this your first time showing at NZFW?
This will be my first solo show at NZFW. Last year I collaborated with Ryder and showed a 16-look collection in a group show.
What does showing at NZFW mean to you?
NZFW is such an institution, so being fortunate enough to take part means the world to me. It will definitely the biggest moment in my career so far! Showing at NZFW also means I can open up my label’s point of view to a larger audience, and hopefully grow my presence in the industry.
What is the inspiration behind your collection?
My autumn/winter 2017 collection is based on a hungover walk I took around Buenos Aires back in June. Despite being in a sorry state I was so incredibly happy, falling in love with the disheveled beauty of the old buildings and the faded wealth of the city. This collection re-creates my mindset at that moment.
What is your favourite piece in the collection?
That would have to be a big fuzzy, wool blanket coat that I recently added to the collection. Absolutely perfect for those between-season evenings!
Who is the Jarrad Godman girl?
The JG customer can be anyone who appreciates good quality clothing and has a sense of humour – someone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously.
How have you styled the show – what’s the theme, and the soundtrack?
The styling was in collaboration with Servilles. We have worked really hard to create an avant garde vibe while at the same time keeping everything as clean as possible. The soundtrack is still in progress at this stage, but expect something dark with a beat.
What hair and makeup looks are you loving this season?
I have always been a fan of natural greys and natural curls.
What are you going to do to celebrate afterwards?
One of my stockists has been so supportive in the lead-up to the show, they have organised an exclusive after-party for those attending. I will be there having a drink or two to celebrate all the hard work everyone has put into this show.
What’s next for Jarrad Godman?
I would love to build up a nice solid base within the New Zealand market, so I am currently working towards that goal.
What would your advice be to those who want to start their own label?
Never be afraid to ask for help. We have such a supportive industry here in NZ and those who are able to help, will.
