In this day and age there’s a plethora of ways to discover fresh wardrobe ideas. However none quite match up to the excitement that the beginning of a new season on the international runway circuit brings. The Autumn/Winter 2022 shows kicked off in New York last week, providing sartorial inspiration aplenty. The spectrum this season was delightfully broad — ranging from restrained separates, right through to full-blown frou-frou gowns.
Scroll on to discover five noteworthy trends from the runways, and streets, of New York Fashion Week AW22.
1. Happily ever after
Over-the-top looks straight out of a fairytale were out in full force — think capes, flowing trains and jewel tones. Perhaps pandemic fatigue is to blame for the increasingly flamboyant displays of escapism on the runways of late.
2. Beige brigade
Show-goers had a soft spot for lightweight trench coats this season, layered over neutral looks consisting of cosy turtlenecks and boots. This easy outfit formula does just the trick as temperatures begin to dip.
3. Twinkle twinkle
An embellishment making a surprising but strong come back is the humble sequin. While plenty of glamorous gowns were covered in head-to-toe sparkle, sequinned separates were also styled with utilitarian pieces for a daytime spin.
4. Cut and paste
The street style set played peek-a-boo outside the shows, sporting knitwear that features cleverly placed cut-outs. A playful way to show a little skin — think decolletage, waist and shoulders — without baring all.
5. In the mood
Sensuality has been in the air over the past few seasons; lace, leather, sheer fabrics and sultry cuts continue to dominate the collections. No longer just reserved for after-dark, moody dressing should be considered for the daytime too.
