For the past week our social media accounts have been flooded with the latest collections from New York Fashion Week. While the runways will no doubt inform the trends we’ll be indulging in this time next year, we’re looking to the streets for a more immediate dose of sartorial inspiration.
From the daring to the demure, the micro-trends to the new classics, here are the five street style trends set to take the fashion crowd by storm this autumn:
Pendant necklaces
You heard it here first: the statement necklace is officially back. Rather than diving headfirst into the maximalist necklaces of the mid-2010’s, NYFW attendees are making a case for a softer re-entry – think chunky pendants hanging from simple chains. In many ways, it feels like a natural evolution of last year’s bag charm obsession. Want to get ahead of the trend? Jasmin Sparrow and Sophie Buhai have great options available.
Dopamine dressing
Following seasons dominated by minimalism and “clean girl” dressing, bold colour is back on the agenda this season. From high-impact hues and clashing patterns to deliciously tactile textures, it’s refreshing to see a joyful return to dressing for pure pleasure.
Peekaboo colour
Not quite ready to dive headfirst into a colour-soaked wardrobe? Add a point of interest to an otherwise neutral outfit with a pop of red. We spotted scarlet knits peeking out from under winter coats, crimson satin skirts contrasting black leather and plenty of striking red accessories.
Leopard print
The street-style set took the term “concrete jungle” literally this week, embracing leopard-print coats and accessories as their unofficial uniform. Layer over your favourite denim and a button-up shirt to elevate the everyday or embrace your inner maximalist by pairing it with clashing prints or fabrics – snakeskin and red leather were standout pairings outside the shows.
Pillbox hats
If there’s one hat trend to have on your radar this season, it’s the pillbox. Most popular in the ’60s — and famously beloved by Jackie O — the vintage silhouette re-emerged on last year’s runways, from Emilia Wickstead’s AW25 show to Altuzarra’s SS26 collection. Having now secured its place on the front row, its transition into our wardrobes feels all but guaranteed.
