If fashion trends are determined by the frequency of Google searches, then 2015 will see you wearing tulle skirts, palazzo pants and (wait for it) waist trainers – at least that’s the conclusion drawn from Google’s latest style-skewed survey.
The search engine compiled over six billion searches to gain insight into which trends are going up and which are on the decline in the apparel category, settling on three key trending searches for Spring ’15:
Tulle skirts
Carrie Bradshaw is quite clearly still a style icon, despite having left the small screen over a decade ago. According to Google, tulle skirts rose in popularity by 34% between January 2014 and January 2015, with people not only looking to buy the ballerina-style skirts but to also try their hand at a little DIY.
Jogger pants
Clearly comfort is key for spring, with jogger pants having had a noticeable increase in search for men, women, boys, girls and even toddlers (so that’s everyone then?). While we love a jogger pant for lounging around and much prefer them to a daggy pair of trackies, we can’t help but be a little bit disturbed that the most-searched style was Emoji joggers. (Sorry, what?)
Midi skirts
With “how to wear” and “outfits” dominating midi skirt-related searches, it’s clear that this is one of those trends that requires a little bit of styling to pull off to perfection. Google concludes that the midi skirt has seen a nine fold increase in search over the past three years, with top silhouettes including pleated, pencil, A-line, high waisted, skater, circle and flared.
Other trends to experience more seasonal growth include white lace dresses, high waisted bikinis, rompers, shift dresses and white jumpsuits, while normcore, peplum, skinny jeans and corset dresses are all on the decline.
While these trends may not necessarily align with what we’re seeing on runways, you can’t deny this survey offers a pretty insightful look into personal style preferences. As for us, we’ll take the midi skirts, but we’ll leave the Emoji joggers – at least for now.
