Autumn-winter 2022 runway looks.

With winter in full swing, it’s time to start thinking about perfecting your wardrobe. A bit of fashion-forward flair and versatile accessorising can go a long way to make your outfits feel new and different, and we’ve curated a round-up of ten staples to help jump-start your styling. Read on to discover why these chic pieces will be your go-tos all season long.

1. The Penny coat

The retro-style ‘Penny Lane’ coat has had a resurgence over the past couple of years. It’s easy to see why — there’s nothing better than lush shearling and ’70s flair to stay fabulously warm. Our eyes are on the Charlotte Simone ‘Star’ coat, available from Aotearoa’s Maverix, which is currently running a pop-up in Newmarket, Auckland.

Charlotte Simone’ Star Coat’, $599, from Maverix.

2. Platform boots

Embrace the post-punk aesthetic seen on overseas runways with a durable platform heel — the chunkier, the better. As seen on every footwear style imaginable, from sneakers to heels, our pick is the romantic Mi Piaci ‘Morley’ boot, available in a luxurious chocolate brown or black croc leather.

Mi Piaci ‘Morley’ boot, $400.

3. Cut-out knitwear

Whether a demure side cut-out or an exposed midriff, the shapely trend is cleverly being utilised by designers. When it comes to knitwear, it’s up to you if you want to show some skin or layer with cotton or merino threads for extra warmth.

Paloma Wool ‘Renzo’ knit, $369, from Black Box Boutique.

4. The turtleneck

A versatile style for a reason, turtlenecks are a must-have for the cooler months. Available in beautiful colours and fabrications, they go perfectly with pants and a blazer or layered under a dress for extra warmth. The Kate Sylvester ‘Alice Skinny’ rib is our top pick — it’s available in three colourways and made from cosy merino.

Kate Sylvester ‘Alice Skinny Rib’, $289.

5. Corsetry

A style that’s flattered the form for centuries, structured corsets and bodices are back in a big way. Juxtapose a bright corset with an oversized wool coat for a head-turning ensemble, or layer over a turtleneck for a suave finish.

Paris Georgia ‘Maeve’ Bodice, $550.

6. Quilted clothing

The luxe cloud-like imprint has been spotted on the likes of Bella Hadid and Kate Middleton and is available in a range of vibrant hues and neutral colours to match your mood. We’re reaching for The Frankie Shop’s ‘Quilted Padded Ripstock’ jacket, with a collarless neckline and plenty of padding for maximum layering and comfort.

The Frankie Shop ‘Quilted Padded Ripstock’ jacket, $518, from Net-A-Porter.

7. Mini skirting

You don’t have to give up the mini this winter; they don’t need to be ultra-cropped or low-rise either. Try the high-waisted Ruby ‘Cher Satin’ mini, inspired by Cher from ‘Clueless’. Pair with tights, knee-high boots and a cable knit for a sophisticated look.

Ruby ‘Cher Satin Miniskirt’, $199.

8. Crossbody bags

While micro-bags are all the rage, we’re all about an everyday carrier that blends style with practicality. A crossbody style is ideal for this purpose, and the Saben ‘Beatrice’ handbag allows you to carry or prop the bag on your shoulder with a detachable shoulder strap and top handle. Even better, it enables you to fit a laptop or tablet to go from the office to dinner with ease.

Saben’ Beatrice Bag’, $529.

9. Split-leg trousers

Tailored pants are particularly accessible for the cooler weather. If you want to switch it up from a slouchier, masculine iteration, look to a split-leg trouser that flatters your pins and can be dressed up with a tailored blazer, flowy blouse, and boots, or paired with a jumper and sneakers for a casual feel.

Mineral ‘Ash Split Hem’ pants, $79.99, from Farmers.

10. Chunky hoops

A ‘more is more’ approach to jewellery is in, with decadent, extravagant plays on pearls, gold, and ’90s shapes. We’re looking to the Alexandre Vauthier ‘Creole’ earrings for a luxurious take on a chunky hoop, fluid in form and plated in 24-carat gold.

Alexandre Vauthier ‘Creole’ earrings’, $534, from Faradays.
