Taylor Hill: the girl every girl wishes they could be BFFs with.
Taylor is not only one of the most stylish models around, she’s also the new face of Topshop. We wanted to know more about her fashion faves and what makes her tick:
How have you prepped for a shoot?
I took a shower last night. I woke up this morning, an hour before the car picked me up, brushed my teeth, made Tate (her dog) breakfast, took him out for a walk and to go to the bathroom. Then jumped in a car and came here!
How would you describe your style?
Today I’m wearing sweatpants because I’m going to the airport but usually I’m very casual say jeans, t-shirt and maybe a sweatshirt. I like to be comfortable at work and if I have a long day. I want to be in flats or tennis shoes. That’s how I’m always thinking!
Is there anything you can’t stop wearing right now?
Sweaters! I have one, over there, it’s a cheetah-print one by Saint Laurent and I love it. It’s just one little layer, a little cardigan, which with the weather being as it is – it might be nice, it might be rainy. I don’t want to always wear a coat, even if it is cold. I feel like I’ve been wearing coats for months I’m over it! So I got this sweater and I’m wearing it nearly every day as an easy throw-on. The print is really interesting too.
What’s your go-to outfit for a casting?
Very simple. Black skinny jeans, a tight shirt so people can see my physique. That’s it.
What’s your favourite thing about winter dressing?
The layering! During the summer fashion can get boring really quick – you only wear so many things and you’re always wearing flip flops or sandals. You can really switch it up in the winter with coats, layers, hats and boots. There’s more to play with.
What is your first Topshop memory?
My first memory was when I did my first New York (fashion week) season and my agent took me into Topshop and bought me black skinny jeans, a white tank top and heels. Everything! I didn’t even know what Topshop was at that point because you were so new to the states. And from then I loved it!
What do you go there for?
It’s fun because you never know what’s in there. It’s fun to just go in and explore and see what you can find. Everything is so trendy and relevant fashion-wise and it’s all new. They never have the same stuff in there all the time so when you go in its so fun because you know you have to get it at the moment because you know it won’t be there for very long! It’s the in-between of low-end and high-end. You feel so comfortable shopping in there too because you’re never spending a fortune getting what you want.
How does it feel to be the campaign girl?
It feels really cool. I never thought I would ever do campaigns! Especially not Topshop. I would always see the big girls doing it and I would never think I’d do it. And here I am!
What was it like growing up in Colorado?
It was cold! But fun. I have a lot of siblings and they’re all my best friends. We would go snowboarding, hiking, sledding on snowdays and just hang out. We lived in the middle of nowhere and the closest city was Denver, 30 minutes away, and even that to me isn’t a real city. Coming here to New York was such a shock. I was like, where’s the sky? It was crazy.
If you weren’t a model, what would you be?
I’d be figuring it out! I was scouted so young and then I didn’t have any idea what I wanted to do yet and people ask me that now but I don’t know, I never had the chance to figure it out. I’d be floating around or at college!
What did you love at school?
I really loved reading and writing. At 13 I read a million words in a year which I’m pretty proud of. In school we had to take reading tests on the computer, I think they were called Accelerated Reader, it’s logged into a system where it tells you how many words is in a book and I read all of the books for that programme, took the tests. I was actually really bad in school but I was really good at reading. So I read them, did the test and read a million words! I’m a sci-fi nerd so I read the Harry Potter books, this series called Aragon which is about dragons. Harry Potter and dragons basically sums up my childhood.
What are you reading at the moment?
I’m reading The Martian – I saw the movie, which was really good, but they always say the book is better than the movie. I’m often on those short 3-4 hour flights with no TV and I’m like what am I going to do, so I often buy a lot of books in the airport before. I’m traveling so much so don’t watch TV so much either so I’ve never seen Game of Thrones which people are amazed by. But when I come home I have all these programmes saved on my TeVO but I’m like, I don’t have time to watch 5 hours of this!
Do you have a favourite movie?
I’ve always loved Pretty Woman. That’s the first one that pops into my head. Otherwise any Disney movie! I know that might sound weird because I’m an adult but I love Tangled and Frozen and even the old ones like The Little Mermaid. I went to Disney World recently with my sister for her birthday, her 18th birthday, we went to Harry Potter World at Universal Studios – we had a blast! We were like children again. It was amazing!
How are you going to celebrate your upcoming 21st?
I’m probably going to go to Vegas! Or Disneyworld! Maybe I’ll do both? I can legally drink in America – I’ve been in this industry for a long time and constantly around it but can never drink it so it would be fun to be like, “I’m here!” I would invite all my friends, all the VS girls, my sisters, my family.
Who would be your ideal or dream guest?
Beyoncé! If she would come to my birthday I would be very happy. I’m going to invite her, let’s see what happens! Send her agent an email, “hey I’m a huge fan of Beyoncé and it’s going to be my 21st birthday – do you think she’d like to come?”
Where are you currently living?
I live here, in New York City. I like it a lot. It’s definitely different from Colorado every time I come back from traveling you really have to adjust to it. It’s kind of a beast! I live in Chelsea and my favourite thing to do is brunch – everyone loves brunch here. Sitting with your friends when it’s nice outside, so classic! I love taking Tate (her dog) out for a walk by the river, near Chelsea Pier and the Hudson river there’s a dog park there to. When it’s cold I don’t know what to do here! New York is the best when it’s warm, I love going to central park and grabbing a slice of pizza. It’s more fun when it’s warm cause this little guy (dog) gets to go outside more.
